Join author Garrett Peck for an exclusive pre-publication book signing at Now Voyager Bookstore! Now Voyager is the first bookstore in the country to get the book - five days before the official publication - and owner Mark Leach is graciously hosting the event. Come by to meet Garrett from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM. The bookstore is located at 357 Commercial Street in the fashionable East End, across from the Provincetown Public Library.

Mansion on O Street
Washington, DC


The book launch party will be held for Garrett and friends at the marvelous Mansion on O Street from 5:30 - 8:00 PM. The event is open to the public. The cost is $40 (+ tax and service), and includes a luscious buffet and an open bar. The Mansion calls it the O-Dinnertini. Garrett will give a short talk and sign books, which will be available for purchase. Afterward people can explore the labyrinth-like interior of the mansion - five Dupont Circle townhouses that J. Edgar Hoover linked together as apartments for G-Men. It has 100+ rooms and 32 secret doors, often disguised as bookshelves.

Arlington Central Library is one of the finest public libraries in the country, and author Garrett Peck researched extensively there while writing The Prohibition Hangover. Come hear Garrett talk about his book in the large auditorium from 7:00 - 9:00 PM. There's plenty of room - the auditorium holds 150 people. Book signings will follow the discussion, thanks to our sponsor, Barnes & Noble.

Jackie's Restaurant is part of a resurgent Silver Spring, a former car repair joint converted in a fun restaurant and bar and some of the best fried chicken in the DC area! Jackie Greenbaum is graciously opening her Back Room bar, home to art exhibits and a really cool former car lift, so her customers can meet Garrett Peck and hear about The Prohibition Hangover. The cost is $10 and includes Prohibition-era cocktail samples made by Scott Palmer and plenty of hors d'oeuvres. A cash bar is available for additional drinks, and books will be available for purchase as well. The program begins at 7:00 PM.

Over-the-Rhine Brewery District
Cincinnati, OH

The Over-the-Rhine Brewery District is the historic center of Cincinnati's rich brewing history. This is the city that gave us bootlegger George Remus, the real-life inspiration for The Great Gatsby. Come join Garrett Peck and OTR president Steven Hampton as we celebrate Christian Moerlein's reintroducing one of of Cincinnati's storied beer brands: Hudepohl 14K. This will be at Fountain Square (520 West Vine). There will be beer, and there will be fun! Garrett will be volunteering at the OTR booth from 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM and will have copies of his book for people to peruse, but the main "literary" event will be the next day when he talks and signs books at the Barnes & Noble on Newport on the Levee (see below).

The Barnes & Noble, located directly across the Ohio River from downtown Cincinnati, is hosting author Garrett Peck for a talk about his book, The Prohibition Hangover. The event will run from 5 - 7 pm at 1 Levee Way, Suite 2127, Newport, Kentucky. Come by right after work, hear a free talk and get your book signed, then dine at one of the many fine restaurants overlooking the Ohio. And you needn't worry about missing Heroes: the season doesn't premier until September 21, so you'd only miss a rerun anyway.

Lexington, KY


Lexington Brewing - home of Kentucky Ale - will host author Garrett Peck for a talk about his book in Shrewsbury Hall at the brewery's downtown location (401 Cross Street). Lexington being a college town, we'll probably discuss the drinking age and binge drinking among college students. The brewery is providing snacks, free beer, and a brewery tour. A book signing will follow in the pub right next door. The fun begins at 6:30 PM.

Louisville, KY


Carmichael's Bookstore, a proud locally owned independent bookstore, won the Publisher's Weekly 2009 Bookseller of the Year Award. Join Garrett Peck, author of The Prohibition Hangover, and Chester Zoeller, author of Bourbon in Kentucky, for an evening of fun during the week of the Kentucky Bourbon Festival. The event is free and open to the public. The talk will be held at Wine Rack, just a block from Carmichael's 2720 Frankfort Avenue location, as we're doing a bourbon tasting as well. The evening starts at 7:00 PM. Come on by!

Woodford Reserve Distillery
Versailles, KY (that's pronounced "ver-SALES," Yankee)

Woodford Reserve is one of the prettiest distilleries you'll ever see, a museum-quality facility meticulously restored, set in a beautiful hollow (or "holler"). Garrett Peck will give an hour-long talk about his book, tying in the bourbon and the American frontier with the legacy of Prohibition. This will be during the Kentucky Bourbon Festival. The talk will be at 1:00 PM in the Conference Room. Books will be available for sale in the gift shop, and you can have it signed too.


September 19 and 20
Temperance Tour
Washington, DC


Garrett Peck will lead the three-hour Temperance Tour of Prohibition-related sites in our nation's capital. The tour is free and is held as part of WalkingTown, DC. Tours on both Saturday and Sunday will start at 12:00 pm at the Temperance Fountain. A tour overview can be found on the menu to your left, or by clicking here. Book signings and a happy hour will be held after each tour.

Eastern Standard
Boston, MA


Eastern Standard is one of the finest cocktail bars in Boston, located at Kenmore Square near Fenway Park. The restaurant - well-known for its extensive program of classic cocktails - threw a Repeal Day party in December 2008, and Bar Manager Jackson Cannon is well known among cocktail aficionados. Come meet Garrett Peck and hear about Prohibition's Legacy and have your book signed (Hey! The Red Sox are out of town that week.). Eastern Standard will be transformed into a speakeasy for the evening. Enjoy cocktail samples, hors d'oeuvres from the period, and a full cash bar where you can try all of your Prohibition-era favorites. There's no admission to enter, but you must have the password (call 617-532-9100 to get the password). The fun kicks off at 6:30 PM.

Come meet author Garrett Peck at the Barnes & Noble located in Boston's Prudential Center, 800 Boylston Street, Suite 179. Garrett will be signing books starting at 1:30 PM, so if you work in the Pru or are visiting Boston that week, come on by!

Sam Adams Brewery

The Sam Adams Brewery holds its monthly open house from 5:00 - 8:00 PM. The theme for the event is "The Prohibition Hangover." Jim Koch provided the final interview for the book shortly before the manuscript was due, and now the brewery is graciously playing host again. The event is open to the public, but the brewery asks that you RSVP. You can do so by clicking on www.samueladams.com and look for the link to brewery tours; Sam Adams advertises for these events through its newsletter, found at the same link. Books will be available for purchase and signing. And there will be free beer (free beer!) and food pairings. The brewery is close to the Stonybrook Station, so if you want to drink, please take the T.

The Methodists were the first church to embrace abstinence from alcohol as part of its doctrine in 1832, and it led the way to "unfermented wine" at communion (i.e. Welch's Grape Juice). But today, many Methodists drink alcohol, and the church is thoroughly ambivalent about the question. Join author Garrett Peck at Foundry United Methodist Church (16th & P Streets, NW) at 12:30 PM for a fascinating discussion on how Methodists have wrestled with alcohol - from Jesus to John Wesley through today.

Louis 649 is one of the finest cocktail bars in New York City, and it hosts a weekly Tuesday Cocktail Tastings session with a guest speaker. Author Garrett Peck has the privilege of speaking on this first Tuesday in October. Come by for the conversation and a fun discussion, have a hand-crafted cocktail, and get your book signed. New York's RumFest is moving to Astor Center - the hub of spirits industry goings-on - near Astor Place and historic Cooper Union. Garrett Peck will one of the evening's guests and will be talking about Demon Rum and signing books. Come for the talk - but stay for the cocktails. Rum!

Garrett Peck returns to his college town, Lexington, Virginia (yes Kentucky, there are other Lexingtons out there) - and to his alma mater, the Virginia Military Institute. Thomas Jefferson called Charlottesville home, and this is where he built Monticello and the University of Virginia. UVA is one of the most prestigious colleges in the country. Garrett Peck will give a talk, read from his book, and sign copies at the Barnes & Noble at the Barracks Road Shopping Center, 1035 Emmet Street, Suite A. The event begins at 6:30 PM.

Garrett Peck will read from and discuss The Prohibition Hangover and sign books at the local independent bookstore, Avid Reader, in downtown Davis at 617 Second Street. Garrett returns to his hometown - Sacramento! - on October 21. Fresh from hitting the Avid Reader in Davis, the bookstore's Sacramento location will host an author event for The Prohibition Hangover. The Avid Reader is at 1600 Broadway at the wonderful and iconic Tower Theater. The event begins at 7:30 PM.

Established in 1858, Elixir is San Francisco's second-oldest saloon and owned by renowned bartender and cocktailian H. Joseph Ehrmann. Thursdays are the regular Cocktail Club - but this week, it'll be "Cocktail Book Club," as guest Garrett Peck will speak about his book, The Prohibition Hangover. The fun begins at 7:00 PM.

The Lafayette Book Store will hold an exclusive author event and book signing for Garrett Peck and The Prohibition Hangover on Sunday, October 25 from 3:00 - 5:00 PM Pacific. This will be the only Bay Area bookstore signing, so come on by! It's just two blocks from the Lafayette BART station and is located at 3569 Mt. Diablo Blvd.

The National Press Club's 32nd Annual Book Fair & Authors' Night will be held on November 17 at the historic club in downtown Washington, DC (529 14th Street, NW). CAGLCC, better known as the gay chamber, will host author Garrett Peck for a discussion about the Business of Drinking. Garrett's talk will highlight the importance of the happy hour to creating business and networking, the $200 billion dollar alcohol industry, the perfect cocktail and getting published. Garrett will also be available to sign copies of The Prohibition Hangover which will be available for purchase at the event. In 2008, Derek Brown threw a Repeal Day Ball to remember to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the end of Prohibition. He hopes to top that in 2009 for the 76th anniversary. This will be at PS 7's in Chinatown (777 I Street, NW) from 9:00pm - midnight - and VIP access from 8:00pm.
Authors Jill DeGroff and Garrett Peck will be there to sign books. This is a party you won't want to miss. In addition, there will be a Temperance Tour starting early in the afternoon.
